I know that’s what you asked for but as your photographer, someone you are trusting with special family memories, I have recently come to the realization that I have been failing you by not sharing with you all the wonderful print options I have available!
I want you walk away from each session not only saying, “That was fun!” but also saying, “Look at these beautiful photos we have on the wall!” Or a coffee table album that your family can flip through time after time, reliving that special day.
I recently sat down at an ordering appointment with a client. She decided she wanted just the digital files from the session and told me she would just order her Christmas cards and photo album through Shutterfly… I swallowed hard and tried to keep my smile. She asked for my sales pitch but I felt defeated; she had already made her decision so all I could mumble was, “I wish I were better at sales.”
I had two options after that: cry and quit OR dig out the boot straps. I’m not going to lie, the next two hours I was definitely leaning towards the first option but then it hit me: These decisions weren’t my client’s fault (dang you, Shutterfly and your good marketing) but I wasn’t doing my part to educate my clients. The first time they see my products shouldn’t be at the ordering session! From the first contact, both the client and I should be aware of the products they want to take home and the budget they have or can expect. I’ve read article after article, why was the light bulb just showing up now?!
If I were to keep selling digital files at my current prices, for clients to take and print their photos through Shutterfly (who’s 2017 revenue was $1.2 million) I would have to do over 200 sessions in a year just to cover my costs! I promise you, I wouldn’t be of any use for my clients or myself if I had to schedule over 200 consultations, photograph 200 sessions and edit 200 orders year after year just to get by!
That’s why I have vowed to make sure every 2019 client walks away with images in their hands! Don’t worry, I’m not throwing out the digital option! But the way you get them and how many you get will change. It will be in addition to beautiful, tangible products.
